The School Year Has Begun!!

So excited this year has gotten started!  We have already had a lot of fun in the Media Center!  I was really excited that Mrs. Lorenz, our new Media Assistant, got to start working this week.  I think she is going to be a great fit for the Media Center.

In Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade this year, our first activity was a QR Code Scavenger Hunt on our iPod Touches!  The kids learned about library policies and some neat facts about me.  The kids had a lot of fun learning this way.  Many were heard to say "This is SO much fun!"  I'll try next week to post some pictures from this activity next week.

I also have a few more "Take a BOOK on Vacation" pictures to post on the blog, so keep checking back!

More Take a BOOK on Vacation Pictures!!

I have just been amazed so far with all the pictures that have been sent to me over the summer.  Since this was something new, I was hoping for maybe one or two kids to send in pictures.  I was so happy to get as many as I have, including some from the wonderful HES staff!  If you go on vacation during the school year, please feel free to send in your pictures and I will post them on the HES Media Center Blog.

Now onto the newest pictures I received a few days ago.  I think that these qualify as the furthest away from HES.  Isabella, an incoming third grader, and her family traveled to Italy. It was approximately 4370 miles from HES! These two pictures were taken in Venice Italy.  While in Italy Isabella and her family also visited Pisa and Rome.

Isabella is reading a great Goosebumps book by R.L. Stine!  I just love this series! It was first published when I was beginning college.  I remember getting many of my reluctant readers during student teaching and my first year of teaching third grade hooked on reading through these books.

Thanks to Isabella and her mom for sharing the pictures.

Happy Reading!!

Hope to see everyone at Open House on Tuesday!

More Take a BOOK on Vacation Pictures!!

Aliyanna and her family enjoyed spending time at home this summer, which is approximately 10 miles from HES.  In my opinion, sometimes those where my favorite vacations!  Even with all the fun that Aliyanna and her family had this summer, she made sure there was time to fit in some reading.

Aliyanna enjoys showing her little brother Ceasar the importance of reading.  She likes to have someone listen to her read.

When Aliyanna's little brother isn't available, her "baby" is always willing to listen to a story.  Aliyanna is reading her a bedtime story.

Thanks to Aliyanna and her grandmother, better known as Mema for sending in the pictures!

There is still time to send me your pictures.  In fact I just got another set of pictures last night.  They will be up on the blog soon.

Mrs. Kieber's Take a BOOK on Vacation Pictures

Mrs. Kieber, our Speech Pathologist, had a great summer vacation.  She did a bit of traveling this summer.

Mrs. Kieber went out to Kentucky.  While she was there her family went to visit Mammoth Cave National Park.  Since 1816 visitors have toured Mammoth Cave.  It is the world's largest known cave system with more than 390 miles explored.  Mrs. Kieber took a little time after the tour to do a bit of reading before getting back in the car.  If you look closely you can see Mrs. Kieber's son Timothy peeking over the sign! I know I'm going to be talking a lot of Mrs. Kieber when we go back to school because I have really wanted to visit Mammoth Cave.

Mrs. Kieber also traveled through Virginia.  While in Virginia she and her family visited Natural Bridge, which is a National Historical Landmark.  They took a hike to see Natural Bridge, but along the way they came across a waterfall.  Mrs. Kieber took some time out to enjoy the peaceful of the woods and the waterfall to do a bit of reading.

After a short break she continued on her hike and made it to Natural Bridge.  After admiring the natural beauty that Mother Nature created, Mrs. Kieber took a little time to read before starting the hike back up.

Besides hiking down to see Natural Bridge, you can also visit some underground caverns and visit Virginia's largest indoor butterfly garden.

There is still time to send me your pictures!

Mrs. Gilman's Take a BOOK on Vacation Pictures!

Mrs. Gilman and her family took a great vacation down to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina a few weeks ago.  Myrtle Beach is approximately 450 miles from HES.  She enjoyed spending time with her whole family.  In fact she ran into one of our HES students, Evey while she was there.  They had some fun in the sun and sand.

Both Evey and Mrs Gilman remembered to take some time during all that fun to read while they were at the beach!  Mrs. Gilman thinks there is nothing more relaxing than sitting on the beach with a nice cold bottle of water, and a great book!

Don't forget there is still time to send me your pictures!  All of the pictures that have been sent to me will be on display during Open House!

Also check out the post below about the two great books I read.  The blog had its first comment written by Ame Dyckman the author of Boy + Bot!!  This made my day!!

Two Great Books!!

The first book suggestion I have is a picture book.  The book is Boy + Bot by Ame Dyckman.  It is about a boy who finds a Robot in the woods.  This book is a wonderful story about caring and friendship!  I highly recommend this book.  Has it become one of my absolute favorites, affirmative!!!  I don't buy too many books to go in my personal collection anymore, but this is one that has a special place on my shelf! Click here to visit Ame Dyckman's blog.  Below is the book trailer.

The second book suggestion I have is one that just had its book birthday yesterday. (A book birthday means the day the book is published.)  The book is The Secret of the Fortune Wookiee by Tom Angleberger.  This is the third installment in the Origami Yoda series.  In this book Dwight is not attending McQuarrie Middle School, which means that the kids are on there own without Origami Yoda.  But then Fortune Wookiee makes an appearance and starts to give advice.  If you want to find out what happens, you have to read the book.  Click here to visit Tom Angleberger's website.

We will have two copies of each book available for checkout next year at the HES Library.

Another Take a BOOK on Vacation Pictures! Part Two

Like I said in the last post, Ashley did a lot of traveling and reading this summer. This post takes Ashley up to New Hampshire.

Ashley's first stop for fun and reading was Story Land in Glen New Hampshire.  It is approximately 645 miles from HES.  Story Land was opened in 1954.  A few years before that the owners had bought many dolls from Germany based on storybook characters.  This became the basis for the park.  The park started with only one ride, but now is spans 35 acres and has over 20 rides.

Ashley then spent some time relaxing and reading with her family at their lake house in Ossippe New Hampshire.  It is approximately 620 miles from HES.  This is Ashley and her cousin Colleen taking some time to sit on the dock and read.  It looks like such a great place to sit with a good book!

Then Ashley went to Holy Cross College to visit John J. Tivnan Field.  It is approximately 400 miles from HES.  The reason they went to visit the field is John J. Tivnan is Ashley's 4th cousin.  He was a great pitcher in the late 1940's.

Thanks to Ashley and her mom for sharing these pictures!

Another Take a BOOK on Vacation Pictures!! Part One

I checked my email the other night and I was thrilled to see some more pictures for our "Take a BOOK on Vacation" program.

Ashley did SO much traveling and reading this summer, I had to break her pictures down into two parts. In this first picture Ashley traveled to the Jamestown Colony in Jamestown, VA. This is approximately 190 miles from HES. Jamestown was America's first permanent English Colony. In this picture Ashley is sitting in front of a statue of Captain John Smith.

Ashley stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg, VA, which is approximately 170 miles away from HES.  Ashley made sure that she took a break from all of the fun stuff that the Great Wolf Lodge offers to read a bit.

Look for Part Two of Ashley's "Take a BOOK on Vacation" pictures.  They will be posted soon!

Nurse Page's Take a BOOK on Vacation Pictures

Nurse Page had a very relaxing vacation at Lost River State Park in West Virginia.  It is approximately 185 miles from HES.

Lost River State Park encompasses 3,712 acres.  It is one of the oldest parks in West Virginia.  Lost River State Park is the perfect choice for hiking because they have miles of trails with beautiful flora and fauna.  They also have horseback riding, seasonal nature and recreation programs, game courts for tennis, volleyball, and many other games.

Nurse Page enjoyed visiting the Lee House Museum and spent some time quietly reading there.  She also enjoyed reading by the water while cooling off her feet.

Reading about Lost River State Park and seeing Nurse Page's pictures has made me want to check out the park.
