November is National Picture Book Month. This celebration is a recent one for schools, libraries, authors and readers to promote literacy at all ages. Many times in the library we hear these words, "I want to check out a chapter book!" Chapter books are certainly wonderful, but often students want to rush to chapter books because they think picture books are too easy.
In reality, many picture books are written for older readers at high reading levels. Books with illustrations working together with text can give readers a better understanding of challenging concepts. For example, Carole Boston Weatherford's book Freedom on the Menu tells the story of the Greensboro Sit-in. Doreen Rappaport's biography of Eleanor Roosevelt (Eleanor, Quiet No More) chronicles the First Lady's transition from childhood to the White House. Photographs like Nic Bishop's in his book Frogs capture wildlife in action-an experience many children don’t have.
Reader understanding of all of these topics are enhanced because of their illustrations. The picture book format provides the right balance to make the topic more accessible for students.
During November I hope you'll challenge yourself to read a few picture books and enjoy the work of both authors and illustrators! You can print this November calendar with picture book suggestions. Let's read, share, and celebrate the power of picture books!
Happy Reading!!

October Already!
It had been a while since I have been able to post anything on the blog. The new school year was off to a fast start and I barely had time breathe! And then I got sick! I have not been that sick in many many years. I'm still not 100% yet, but I'm on the road to being there soon!
I think fall is finally here! I went out to dinner last night with my parents and it was a lot cooler once the sun went down. October is one of my favorite months due to the change in the temperature, the leaves beginning to change color and it is almost time for Book Fair!
The Fall Book Fair will be October 24th through October 28th. We will be open during the Fall Festival from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Keep an eye out for another post about the Book Fair. The flyers will be coming home soon, as well as the All for Books sheet.

Books About Libraries and Books
My Cute Graphics |
This next book holds a special place in my heart because of the cover. When I first read the book The Library by Sarah Stewart I had to share it with my mom. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. Her first words on seeing the cover were "She reminds me of you"! This book is one of my favorites about books and libraries. Elizabeth, like me, didn't like to play with dolls or skate. All she wants to do is read. Growing up I always had a book with me no matter where I went. I'm still like that today. Right now I can think of three books I have in my car, just in case.
I was so excited to find a new book about a library, The NOT So Quiet Library by Zachariah OHora. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. Oskar and Theodore, like me, love going to the library. But one Saturday their trip to the library isn't as peaceful as they want it to be. See if you can figure out what might be happening at the library from the cover. It took me a bit to spot the hint. Sometimes after reading many books about libraries they all start to seem the same. This book is something new and fresh for me. I can't wait to share it with the kids next year!
See the titles below for some other great books about libraries and books.

A Favorite Author: Salina Yoon
I know as a Library Media Specialist when I'm reading a book to students, I'll say "This is one of my favorite authors." I always mean it because I have a lot of favorites. Well, Salina Yoon is one of my favorite favorites!
I was first introduced to Salina Yoon's work with the book Penguin and Pinecone. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. I fell in love with this book! It is such a sweet story of friendship. The story has such a great message that can be used and needed in the classroom. Salina's illustrations are simple and fit perfectly with the story. Penguin is one of my favorite characters in all of literature. I get so excited when I see that a new one is coming out! The newest one, Penguin's Christmas Wish is due to be published on September 6, 2016. I already have it pre-ordered for our library!
Besides Penguin, Salina has introduced us to many other characters through her books. She has introduced us to Bear, who has been in three books of his own. In the newest Bear story, Bear's Big Day, he is starting school. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This is a great book for the beginning of school or for a student starting school for the first time. In this book Salina also sneaks Penguin in. When you read, see if you can spot Penguin.
In May, Salina introduced to the book Duck Duck, and Porcupine, which gave us three new lovable characters. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. Even though only two characters in this book talk, Little Duck still gets his point across. We will get a second story with these characters in January 2017 called My Kite is Stuck. And according to Salina, Penguin will make a cameo!
In addition to all these wonderful books I've already mentioned, one of my absolute favorites is Be A Friend. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This book really took a place in my heart because it put into words and pictures how I felt many times growing up. Just as in Penguin and Pinecone this is a wonderful story of friendship.
You can find many of Salina Yoon's books at the Public Library. Check some out and tell me your favorite in the comments or on Twitter. If you don't make it to the Public Library this summer, the HES Library has a whole section of her books.

Book A Day: Hensel and Gretel Ninja Chicks
I just absoultly LOVE the ninja series that Corey Rosen Schwartz has created around familiar fairy tales! They are so hysterical, I laugh no matter how many times I read them. The newest book is Hensel and Gretel Ninja Chicks by Corey Rosen Schwartz and Rebecca J. Gomez. This book, and the two others, were illustrated by Caldecott Medal winner Dan Santat. Click here for a summary on Goodreads.
Fractured fairy tales have always been a favorite of mine. I fascinated to see how the author takes a familiar and well loved tale and puts their own spin on it. Corey Rosen Schwartz has a really knack for tweaking the story and making it so funny. As I was reading this one I realized how this one ties back to The Three Ninja Pigs. I'm not going to spoil by telling you how, but pay attention to the words and the illustrations. And speaking of the illustrations, Dan Santat's are WONDERFUL!! He is such a gifted illustrator and that truly comes through in this book.
I think next year I'm going to have to set up a ninja display and include the two I have mentioned above and Ninja Red Riding Hood, as well as a few other ninja books. These books would be great for PreKindergarten though 5th Grade students. Picture books still have a lot of value for older readers!

Book A Day: Sweet Home Alaska
Even though I haven't been posting all my books, I have been reading every day! Being able to read is one of the best parts about summer. I hope that everyone else has been taking time to read as well. I ran into a wonderful HES family Wednesday in Target and they were so excited to tell me that they had just been at the Public Library. And they even showed off the badges that they had received from the reading program.
One of the books that I have recently read is Sweet Home Alaska by Carole Estby Dagg. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This is an awesome historical fiction book. For many years I didn't really enjoy historical fiction, in fact, I had to force myself to read it. But after a few suggestions from "book people" that I respect, I realized I had just been reading the wrong books! It has become a genre that I really enjoy.
This book takes place during the Great Depression. Like most historical fiction books, this book takes place during a real life event. It introduces you to the Palmer Colony project in Alaska. I have always been fascinated by Alaska. One of my favorite vacations I have taken with my parents was to Alaska. I wanted to read this book because I had visited Palmer, Alaska. It just made the experience of reading the book even more special. Even if you haven't been, this is still a wonderful read.
I would recommend this book for 4th and 5th Grade students. I would even recommend to their parents as well.

Take a BOOK on Vacation: Mrs. Gilman
Mrs. Gilman has been enjoying a vacation with her family down in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She has been taking some time to relax and recharge after the school year. This is an annual trip that Mrs. Gilman and her family take every year. Myrtle Beach is about 429 miles away from HES.
I love the picture that Mrs. Gilman sent! It is one that I call "the view from here". It shows us the relaxing spot that has picked to enjoy her book!
There is still a lot of time to submit your own pictures. Click here for more information.

I was sent the first Take a BOOK on Vacation picture! It is from Mrs. Day, who was known last year as Ms. Cosper. She and her husband traveled to Aguas Calientes, Peru. Book A Day: Dory And The Real True Friend
My Cute Graphics |
One of my favorite things about summer is all the time I have to read! This summer I'm reading the Black-Eyed Susan books so that I'm ready for next year. I'm also reading a mix of picture books, nonfiction books, and chapter books. I also will throw in a few grown up book and some professional books during my vacation. Right now in between the kids books, I'm reading a biography on Alexander Hamilton and the book about the musical Hamilton! I am a closet history nerd!
The book I'm posting about today is Dory And The Real True Friend by Abby Hanlon. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This book is the sequel to Dory Fanstasmagory. This book is a whole lot of fun to read. It is a great chapter book for those students who are going into Second Grade and Third Grade as an independent read. It would also make a great read aloud for those students going into Kindergarten and First Grade. This book is a great follow up to Hanlon's first book. I found myself laughing out loud many times. If you like Junie B. Jones, you will like Dory! And the best news is that Dory will be in a third book, Dory Dory Black Sheep. It will be published on September 20, 2016!

Summer Fun!!
My Cute Graphics |
I've started reading some of the nominees for the 2016-17 Black-Eyed Susan Picture Book Award. There are some really great choices this year. I'm very excited to share them with the kids next year. Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, and Third Grade students can read the picture books and have me ask them questions. If they answer the questions correctly, the kids will get to write their name on the form under that book in the hallway. When they have read 5 or more Black-Eyed Susan books they will have their picture taken and put up on the Wall of Fame.
Students in Fourth and Fifth Grade will have the same opportunity as the younger students. The only difference is that they will be reading chapter books and graphic novels. They will have to go on the computer and answer a few questions and write their opinion of the book. Just like the younger students they will be able to write their name under that book in the hallway and when they have read 5 or more books they will get put up on the Wall of Fame.
If you want to get a jump start on the Black-Eyed Susan books, you can click on the links below to see a list of each type of book.

Calling All Library Books
It is hard to believe that we are down to the last two weeks of school! It seems like it was just Spring Break! I don't know where the time went!
During the next two weeks all library books need to be returned. There are some library books that have been checked out since the beginning of the year! If these books can't be found, please pay for them so that we can replace them for the next school year.

Marc Tyler Nobleman Visits HES!!
On Thursday, March 31, 2016 author Marc Tyler Nobleman visited Hollywood Elementary. Marc Tyler Nobleman is the author of over 70 books. When he came to HES he talked about two of his books Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman and Billy the Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman. I read both books ahead of time and I learned so much! I couldn't wait to hear Marc Tyler Nobleman had to say.
The first presentation was for 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade. All of the students are working on completing research, so his presentation was easy for them to relate to. One of my favorite things that Marc said during his presentation was researching was just like playing hide-and-seek. I'm going to be using this from now on. The kids were on the edge of their seats finding out about the creators of Superman, who were only in high school when they invented the character. Then we moved onto Batman, my favorite superhero. Once again the students were so interested in the little known co-creator of Batman. Bill Finger was the unknown person who made the Batman character the one we know today, but didn't get any credit. The message that Marc Tyler Nobleman stressed to the students during this presentation is you must do the right thing in this world. And if someone is taking advantage of you, like what was done to Bill Finger, you need to stand up for yourself and fight for what is right!
I have recently started an after school group for Book Talking. These nine students had the privilege of eating lunch with Marc Tyler Nobleman. They really enjoyed having some time with him in a small group setting. We talked about what he would love to write about, favorite books, and what super power would we love to have.
A great time was had by all during Marc Tyler Nobleman's visit to HES. If students were not able to purchase his books, there will be two each available for check out real soon. A huge thank you goes to the HES PTA for helping make Marc Tyler Nobleman's visit possible!

presentation and bring it down to our primary students. He passed along the
same message of doing the right thing in life and standing up for yourself. I
also liked how he encouraged the students, when thinking about their career, to
make sure they picked something they liked to do because they would be doing it
for a long time. Our students really enjoyed see the pictures that Marc shared
with them of him dressed up like Superman and Robin.

Happy Valentine's Day
Valentine’s Day is more than just a day to celebrate love. It’s a celebration of who we are as people. As humans we thrive because of our relationships with other people. We work together in groups to solve problems. We have teams to accomplish goals. We have friends to spend time with. We learn from others of all ages.
The people around us make a difference to us every day.
Which is why February 14th is a great day to write letters and cards to friends and family members we appreciate.
Valentine’s Day has a long history and there are many different traditions celebrated around the world. The United Kingdom began the tradition of sending flowers, chocolates and cards. In the area of Slovenia (in Europe near Austria and Hungary) February 14th is a celebration of spring. Men and women go out into the fields to being their work. In some countries in Central America February 14th is a traditional day to do acts of kindness for friends.
Let's keep the kindness going this week whole week. Here are a few things that you can do:
Monday: Read about the traditions of Valentine's Day on Pebble Go.
If you need the user name and password, please email me. Please
make sure you mention who your student is, because this log in is
only for HES students. Once in the database, go in
to Social Studies, and then Holidays.
Tuesday: Do like puzzles? Do this interactive word search from National
Geographic Kids.
Wednesday: Do a Random Act of Kindness for someone.
Here are some ideas for people of all ages.
Thursday: Make a card for a friend or relative. Follow these directions at
Instructables for a simple card or for a more challenging card.
Friday: Watch a Valentine-themed video from PBS Kids.
Check back tomorrow for a post about how some of our HES students filled in the following sentence starter:
"I LOVE my Media Center because ..."

Happy Chinese New Year!
Calendars are an invention of people. Time passes from day to day with the cycle of the sun rising and setting. Centuries ago people tried to measure time. They created the calendar as a measurement tool to keep track of how fast time was moving. However, just like there is more than one kind of pencil, or one kind of television, or gaming system, there is also more than one kind of calendar.
The Chinese New Year begins this year on February 8, 2016. Just like our New Year is always on January 1st, the Chinese New Year is always on the first day of their calendar. One of the most interesting things about the Chinese calendar is that they identify each year with an animal. In simple terms, it’s like a mascot for the year.
This year will be the Year of the Monkey. The Chinese say that people who are born during a Year of the Monkey are enthusiastic, cheerful, quick-witted and creative!
The Chinese people celebrate their culture in a 15-day celebration of the New Year. They celebrate with fireworks, parades, special rituals and foods. Click here to watch a Youtube clip to see how some Chinese people celebrate the New Year.
To celebrate Chinese New Year, skip the fortune cookies, which are really an American invention, and try out a tangram puzzle. Tangrams are ancient Chinese puzzles. See below for printable Tangrams. If you’re in the mood for something with a more artistic flair, download and color this Year of the Monkey page. Click here for a link to a coloring page.

Have I Got A BOOK For You!!
At the beginning of February I read to all students the book Have I Got a Book For You! by Melanie Watt. In this book the salesman, Mr. Al Foxword, is trying to his book. If you haven’t read the book, it is a must read! I picked this book, because I wanted students to try and “sell” books to their classmates. I have found that many students are more likely to read books suggested by their classmates. All students have to do is fill out the online form and submit it. Click here for the online form. Kindergarten and First Grade students can have help from parents filling out the form.
Once the form is read and checked for spelling errors, I will take a picture of the student and the book. The review will be printed out and will be displayed in the hallway for about a week. Then it will be placed in a binder for students to look through. Also with parent permission the book review or book review and picture will be placed on the HES Media Center Blog. Students can do more than one and it can either be a fiction or nonfiction book.
I can't wait to see what books get reviewed! Keep checking back for some great book suggestions! Sometimes I have actually had some authors respond with a comment for the student about his/her book review.
Happy Reading!!

Overdue Books!
This year the students have been doing a great job of returning their library books. There are still some books that have been out since the beginning of the school year. Any students who have any books out since September, October, or November will not be allowed to check out until the book is either returned or paid for. If you pay for the book and you find it later, we will refund your money.
I will be sending out overdue notices on Thursday, January 28, 2016.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day
I hope everyone is enjoying our day off for Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday. Even though we are doing our own things, don't forget to give a thought to the man did so much for our country. There are so many great books written about Martin Luther King's life. I've got a few listed below that I really like.
The first one is a National Geographic Reader: Martin Luther King by Kitson Jazynka. Click her for a summary on Goodreads. This is a great one for the younger readers. There is even a fact check quiz at the back of the book.
This next book is great for more independent readers, 3rd Grade and above. It is Who Was Martin Luther King Jr. by Bonnie Bader. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This is part of the series I call the bobble head series. This series is a full of all kinds of neat facts and great information. I really like this series and the What Was series. This series takes historical events and make them accessible to kids. One in this series that has Martin Luther King Jr. in it, is What Was the March on Washington by Kathleen Krull. Click here for a summary on Goodreads.
These next two are great books to share as a family. The first is Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. written by Doreen Rappaport and illustrated by Bryan Collier. The second book that is great to share as a family is I Have A Dream by Martin Luther King Jr. and illustrated by Kadir Nelson. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This book takes his famous I Have a Dream speech and adds illustrations to it. The illustrations in this book take my breath away. Kadir Nelson is such a gifted illustrator. His illustrations always make me feel like I am right there witnessing in person whatever scene he has painted. If you haven't seen his illustrations, please find a book that he has illustrated and you will be amazed. The illustrations that he did in this book did not go unnoticed, Nelson won a Coretta Scott King Award in 2013.
Happy Reading!!

These next two are great books to share as a family. The first is Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. written by Doreen Rappaport and illustrated by Bryan Collier. Animals in Winter
As students learn about animal adaptations for winter including hibernation, migration and survival there are many great resources out there for animal lovers!
One of my favorites is the Bear Cam from the North American Bear Center. Here you can watch real bears in their dens. In the past years these cameras have recorded the miracle of birth as mothers give birth to cubs and care for them in the den. You can see different Bear Cams and learn lots of interesting bear facts at www.bear.org/website/.
For something really interesting take a look at this fox hunting in several feet of snow. Foxes are master listeners as they are tuned to what is happening under the snow. Watch and then run to your library to check out Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner.
You can read more books about animals in winter at your library! A few of these titles can be found at our school library, but most can be found at the public library.
