Another Take a Book on Vacation Picture

I was so excited when my I checked my email and found another picture from an Clara, an incoming First Grader.  In this picture she is taking a vacation from the heat and reading inside.  It looks like Clara is reading a Dr. Seuss book.  I just LOVE books by Dr. Seuss!  I can read them over and over and not get tired of them.

A huge thank you to Clara and her mom for sending us a great picture!

Books like Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, and Hop on Pop are great books for incoming First Graders to be reading alone and tag-team reading with an adult.

Keep those pictures coming.  Click here to find out all the information about "Take a BOOK on Vacation".

Miss Hazuda's Take A BOOK on Vacation Pictures

For my summer vacation I went to New Hampshire and Maine.  While in New Hampshire my family and I stayed with good friends.  I also had a tag-along visitor named Fly Guy, but more about him in a later post.

One of the cool things that we did in New Hampshire was to ride the Cog Railroad up to the top of Mt. Washington.  If you ever get to New Hampshire, around Mt. Washington, take a ride on the Cog Railroad.  Mt. Washington is approximately 653 miles from HES.  While visiting the top, I managed to do a little reading.  But it was very cool outside, about 47 degrees!!

After we said good-bye to our friends we moved on to Bar Harbor, Maine where we visited Acadia National Park.  We did some hiking, and on our last day there we got up at 3:30 am to drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain for the sunrise.  This is where the first rays of sun are seen in the United States. Cadillac Mountain is approximately 757 miles from HES.  I did some reading during the sunrise, but not a lot because the view was incredible.

Don’t forget to send me in pictures of you reading this summer.

Another Take a BOOK on Vacation Picture!!

Just as I was finishing up my vacation to New Hampshire and Maine I checked my email and found another "Take a BOOK on Vacation" picture.  This one is from Chloe, who is reading The Lemonade War, by Jacqueline Davies.  (Which by the way is a great book for Fourth and Fifth Grade.  Click here for a summary of the book.)

This picture was taken at Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida.  It is approximately 840 miles from HES.  Thanks to Chloe and her mom for providing us with this great picture!

Two Great Websites!

The first website I want to share is a keyboarding practice website.  It is important that kids today have a basic understanding of keyboarding skills.  I just love the BBC Dance Mat Typing site for 2nd-5th Grade students.  The characters are very engaging and fun.  This site provides good practice for keyboarding skills.

The second website I want to share is ABCYA.  This site has activities for students in Kindergarten to 5th Grade.  There different games to practice letters (some typing), math, and other fun learning games.  This site is very interactive and allows the kids to have a lot of fun while practicing important skills.

Don't forget to take a break from screen-time (computer and video games) and get outside to play and also take some time to read!

Take A BOOK on Vacation: First Picture!!!

I was so excited when I opened my email the other day and I had our first Take a BOOK on Vacation picture submitted. This picture of Latrell, who has a great Flat Stanley book, was taken at the Star-Spangled Sailabration. This took place at Baltimore Inner Harbor, which is approximately 85.7 miles from HES. The Sailabration was commentating the 200th anniversiy of the War of 1812.
Thanks to Latrell and his mom for providing us with our first picture!

Public Library Newsletter and Much Much More!!

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far, I know I am.

A really neat thing that our Public Library does is to send out a monthly newsletter.  You have to sign up for it, but it is full of wonderful information.  Here is a link to the July Newsletter.  Another neat service that the Public Library has is called Next Reads.  The services lets you pick what type of books you are interested and each month they send you reading list right to your inbox.  I have signed up for this and have found many  new to me books/series that have been great.  It always comes at the right time, when I'm looking for a new book. To sign up for this service visit the Pubic Library site and click on Online Services.  By doing that it takes you to a new page, which you can see by clicking here.  Then look under the Literature heading and then click on NextReads, which will take you to the form to fill out.  When you have time really take a look at the resources offered on this page.  There are a lot of great resources available to the public.

Don't forget to bookmark the Public Library's Kid's Book Blog.  This is a readers advisory blog for children's picture books. Each entry features a cover image and blurb about the book, as well as special interest labels.  Each of the children's librarians take turns selecting a book and writing a post about it for the blog.  I've got it bookmarked, and refer to it often when I'm looking for some new books.

Hope those of you who signed up for the summer reading program are enjoying the program and doing a lot of reading.  Hope you are making progress towards your goal.

Happy Reading!!
