Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!

Festive Snowman
Image from www.mycutiegraphics.com
Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday to all! Hope everyone has a day filled joyful noise and wonderful memories!

Check out my previous post for some great cookie books!  When I posted, I had not read Cookies:  Bite-Size Life Lessons by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. While doing some last minute Christmas shopping, I stopped by a bookstore. I found a copy of this book in the children's section.  This book is INCREDIBLE!! I LOVE it!  I will be getting a copy of this one for the Hollywood library!  It is a great book that explains terms like "fair" and "unfair" in ways that kids can understand by using cookies.

While I was searching online last night I discovered Amy Krouse Rosenthal has written two more "cookie lesson" books, Christmas Cookies: Bite-Size Holiday Lessons and Sugar Cookies: Sweet Little Lessons on Love.  In the Christmas Cookies book Rosenthal tackles holiday words like "believe, celebrate, and joy".  In the Sugar Cookies book Rosenthal tackles words like "selfless and considerate".  If these two are anything like the first, I can't wait to read them.  I will be getting both for the Hollywood library too.

Don't forget to share what you have been reading over break in the comments!

Happy Reading!!

Cookies, Cookies, Cookies!!

Cookie Mix Ingredients
Image from www.mycutegraphics.com
With the holidays fast approaching, all I seem to be doing is baking cookies! Not that I'm complaining, but sometimes I have to take a break from the cookie dough.  I've got a few good books that you can read and a really fun app for the younger kids.

One of my favorite cookie books has to be The Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett. I never get tired of reading her version of the Gingerbread Boy. She is one of my favorite authors.  I read this too the Kindergarten and First Grade students last week and then we watched Jan Brett draw the Gingerbread Baby.  This was a really treat!  She makes it look so easy!  Each year I try and practice, but drawing is not my thing!

There are a few great cookie books that can be found at the Leonardtown Public Library.  Even if they are in there right now, they can always be put on hold.  The first two written by Lisa Campbell Ernst, The Gingerbread Girl and The Gingerbread Girl Goes Animal Crackers.  I discovered The Gingerbread Pirates by Kristin Kladstrup last year.  I have not personally read Cookies: Bite-Size Life Lessons by Amy Krose Rosenthal, but it looks like one I will be reading real soon. And I can't forget a great cookie one by Mo Willems, The Ducking Gets a Cookie?! What are your favorite cookie books or do you have a great cookie cookbook? Please share in the comments.

An app that I discovered last year, Cookie Doodle, is a a fun app!  It allows the user to "make" cookies.  The user can either use premade dough or mix the dough themselves.  Then they bake the dough and can use cookie cutters to make shapes. Finally they can decorate the cookies.  Last year we had a lot of fun with this app.

Student book reviews will be up soon.  I just have to upload two pictures. Make sure that you keep reading over the Winter Break.  I'll be posting some of the titles that I'm reading.  Some Media Specialists and Teachers have been coming up with lists that they think have a possibility of winning The Caldecott Medal, so those are the books I'm focusing on.  The Caldecott Medal is given for the illustrations.

Happy Reading!!

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.  I hope that everyone is enjoying a day of family and great food.  Below you will find some great Thanksgiving resources along with some great books.

A very cool Thanksgiving site is Plimoth Plantation's you are the Historian. This interactive exploration of the First Thanksgiving between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Native Americans is worth exploring even if you have visited the site in the past. The primary sources that are displayed remind us of how important it is to learn what we can from original sources. Many Thanksgiving stories we love to read aren't rooted in enough facts for them to be considered a reliable source. This historical investigation of that 1621 event clears up several popular misconceptions about the first Thanksgiving such as its length, number of guests, and foods that were eaten.

If you would like to continue to explore the First Thanksgiving, Scholastic's interactive experience includes Virtual Field Trip Videos hosted by reenactors. You can see the Plimoth village, a Wampanoag home, and learn about the Pilgrims trip on the Mayflower.

For current cultural celebrations our focus is often on family, food, and entertainment. The books displayed here are a mixed of fiction and nonfiction to help us celebrate the day!

Happy Reading & Happy Thanksgiving!

My Favorites From National Picture Book Month

I hope that everyone has been enjoying National Picture Book Month, I know I have been.  I've been rereading some old favorites and a few new ones.

On November 2nd the theme was ABC or 123 books.  I picked up a new alphabet book called ABC Zooborns by Andrew Bleiman.  I just loved all the pictures of the baby animals in this book.  I loved at the end how it gave information about all the animals that were featured in the book.

On November 17th the theme was robots, so I got to reread two of my all time favorite picture books:  Robot Zombie Frankenstein by Annette Simon and Boy + Bot by Ame Dyckman.  I just LOVE both of these robot books.  Boy + Bot is a great story about friendship.  Robot Zombie Frankenstein is a funny story with all kinds of shapes and costumes.  I'm so excited for Annette Simon's newest book Robot Burp Head Smartypants.  It is due to be published on February 25, 2014.

Today, November 25th the theme is frogs, but it is also nonfiction Monday. So I'm going to be reading Nic Bishop's Frogs.  I just love anything that Nic Bishop does, well maybe not the books about snakes and spiders.  The information that is provided in the text is presented in such a easy to understand manner.  The photographs, taken by Nic Bishop, that are featured in the book at absolutely incredible, even the snakes and spiders.

I hope that everyone has been enjoying focusing on picture books during November.  If you have had any standouts, please share in the comment section.

National Picture Book Month

November is National Picture Book Month. This celebration is a recent one for schools, libraries, authors and readers to promote literacy at all ages. Many times in the library we hear these words, "I want to check out a chapter book!" Chapter books are certainly wonderful, but often students want to rush to chapter books because they think picture books are too easy.

In reality, many picture books are written for older readers at high reading levels. Books with illustrations working together with text can give readers a better understanding of challenging concepts. For example, Carole Boston Weatherford's book Freedom on the Menu tells the story of the Greensboro Sit-in. Doreen Rappaport's biography Eleanor, Quiet No More chronicles the First Lady's transition from childhood to the White House. Photographs like Nic Bishop's in his book Frogs capture wildlife in action-an experience many children don’t have.

Reader understanding of all of these topics are enhanced because of their illustrations. The picture book format provides the right balance to make the topic more accessible for students.

During November I hope you'll challenge yourself to read a few picture books and enjoy the work of both authors and illustrators!  You can print this calendar in color or black and white with picture book suggestions. Let's read, share, and celebrate the power of picture books!

If you are reading any great picture books, please share with me!

Back to School Night Library Card Sign-Up!

I was so happy to have Miss Jill from the Leonardtown Public Library come to HES for Back to School Night.  It was a perfect, since September is National Library Card Sign-Up month (see my post below).  Miss Jill's table was busy because 18 students/parents walked away with a brand new library card!  I was so impressed that we had that many sign up for a library card!

Embedded image permalink

If you or your children don't have a library card, click here to visit the library card page of the Public Library website.  It gives you a few options on how to apply for a card.  You can apply online or in person.  If you want to apply in person there is also a form that you can download, so you can fill it out before you go.

Click here to visit the St. Mary's County Public Library Homepage.  You can find all kinds of helpful information on this site.  I know that I'm on their site a lot, searching for books, using their resources, and many other things.

In the picture, on the right, is Ayden (a proud owner of a brand new library card), his mom, and Miss Jill.  I can't wait to hear about all the wonderful books he checks out using that new card!

National Library Card Sign-Up Month

September is National Library Card Sign-up Month. Do you have a library card for your public library? Our school library will do our best to meet your library needs through the school year. However, our public library provides many additional services. You can check out more books, attend programs, and access additional online resources.

Some of our favorite books for younger readers about the public library include those about animals visiting the library including Book! Book! Book!, Bats in the Library and Library Lion. Even Curious George enjoys visiting his public library!

For the older crowd there are books like Help! I’m a Prisoner in the Library. Arthur also has a library adventure in Arthur Locked in the Library! Instead of getting stuck in the library we hope you’ll visit the public library during September.

Click here to visit the St. Mary's County Public Library Homepage.  You can find all kinds of helpful information at this site.  I know that I'm on their site a lot, searching for books, using their resources, and many other things.

If you or your children don't have a library card, there are many ways to get one.  Miss Jill from the Leonardtown Public Library will be at Open House tonight with library card sign-up forms. She will also have handouts about many of the resources that the Public Library has to offer.  If you can't make it make it to Open House tonight, you can click here to visit the library card page on the Public Library website.  It gives you a few options on how to apply for a card.  You can apply online or in person.  If you want to apply in person there is also a form that you can download, so you can fill it out before you go.

Our Past Week and a Half in the Media Center

I can't believe that we are already into September!  The beginning of school has gone by in the blink of an eye! All classes Kindergarten through Fifth Grade has been able to check out books!  I'm always so happy when we can check out on the first day of class.

As always, at the beginning of the year is all about rules, and routines and book care.  This year with Third Grade through Fifth Grade we also talked about Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn behavior for the library. This behaviors follow along with our PBIS program that we have started at HES this year. The Third Graders took some behaviors that I thought up and sorted them into what category they thought it belonged.  The Fourth and Fifth Grade students had to come up with their own behaviors for the different categories.  Below you will see some of my favorites.

Respectful
Responsible
Ready to Learn
*ask politely for help
*returning books on time
*listen to directions
*helping a classmate and/or teacher
*keep track of your library books
*have a positive attitude
*don’t talk while others are talking
*putting book back where they belong
*have an open mind
*read quietly after checking out books
*keeping library books in a safe place
*don’t be lazy

Coming up next for our HES students:

Kindergarten:  We will be learning all about what they author does.

First Grade: We will begin learning about the differences between fiction and                      nonfiction.

Second Grade:  We will continue to review the differences between fiction and
nonfiction.  We will also begin to learn about nonfiction text
features. We will also be working on our new student log ins.

Third Grade:  We will be "Cracking the Library Code".  This means we will be
learning all about call numbers.  We will also be working on our
                   new student log ins.

Fourth Grade:  We will be reviewing how to read a record on Destiny, our
online library catalog.  We will also be working on our new
                     student log ins.

Fifth Grade:  We will be reviewing how to read a record on Destiny, our online
library catalog and find the book on the shelf. We will also be
working on our new student log ins.

I will also be doing book talks to the different grades.  I'll be posting on the blog some of my favorites from the books that I read this summer.

Last Take A BOOK On Vacation Picture!

Gracelyn, a fifth grader had a very relaxing summer.  She spent a lot of time reading.  She also just enjoyed the lazy days of summer.

To me, this is what defines summer for me, a comfy chair and a great book.

Thanks to all who participated in our Take A BOOK On Vacation program this summer.  We will be doing it again next summer.  So if you didn't send in a picture be planning one for next summer.

Another Take a BOOK on Vacation!!

I've had this picture for a little bit, but with the start of school it has taken me a while to sit down and write this post.

Nathan, a second grader and his brother Ben, a Kindergartner traveled to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina this summer.  Kitty Hawk is about 283 miles away from Hollywood Elementary School.  While they were there the got to go jet skiing, para-sailing and swimming.  They took a break from all that fun and visited Roanoke Island and learned all about the lost colony.  While they were visiting the island Nathan and Ben took time to read a book from the aquarium about ocean life.

I've got one more Take a BOOK On Vacation coming up tomorrow.

Mrs. Gilman's Take A BOOK On Vacation Picture!!

Mrs. Gilman has been busy all summer getting ready and preparing for this new school year.  But she did take some time for a little relaxation and family fun. Mrs. Gilman and her family traveled to Kitty Hawk at The Outer Banks in North Carolina.  This was about 268 miles from Hollywood Elementary School. While there she enjoyed some time on the beach with a very healthy book.

There is still time to send in your Take A BOOK On Vacation pictures.

Now the answer to the question from Mrs. Kieber's post.  The question was "Which lake, of the Great Lakes" didn't Mrs. Kieber and her family stick their toes in?"  The answer is Lake Ontario.

More Take A BOOK On Vacation Pictures!!

These pictures come from Abigail, who is an incoming third grader.  The first picture was taken at Beals Island in Maine.  Beals Island is about 800 miles from Hollywood Elementary School.  It looks like such a peaceful place to sit and read for a while.

The second picture of Abigail was taken in Newport Rhode Island, which is about 450 miles away from Hollywood Elementary School.  In the background is The Breakers, the Vanderbilt Mansion.  It looks like Abigail and her family had a wonderful vacation and I can't wait to hear about it.

There is still time to send in your Take A BOOK On Vacation pictures. Tomorrow Mrs. Gilman's picture will be posted, along with the answer to the question from Mrs. Kieber's post.

Mrs. Kieber's Take A BOOK on Vacation Pictures!!

After looking at Mrs. Kieber's pictures from her trip to Michigan, I think I need to put it on my list of places to visit.

In the first picture Mrs. Kieber has the Mackinac Bridge (pronounced "Mack-in-naw) behind her.  It is in Michigan and separates Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.  You can see Lake Huron behind her. The Mackinac Bridge is about 855 miles away from Hollywood Elementary School.

Mrs. Kieber and her family drove over the Mackinac Bridge and headed northward for about 75 miles. These next pictures were taken in the UP of Michigan (you pronounce each letter "U" "P"), it sands for Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  There first stop was in Whitefish Point Michigan, at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.  This is about 933 miles away from Hollywood Elementary School.  Many ships have sunk there, with the most famous ship being the Edmund Fitzgerald.  There was a wonderful lighthouse on the point.  They were on Lake Superior while visiting these wonderful sites. And of course they had to put their feet in each of the Great Lakes along their journey.

The last picture was taken at Sault Ste Marie (pronounced Soo-saint-Marie) in Michigan.  Sault Ste Marie is about 910 miles away from Hollywood Elementary School.  Mrs. Kieber and her family took a boat tour through the Soo Locks, where the water level has to rise or fall 21 feet to get from Lake Superior to Lake Huron.  At the end of their trip, they headed to Western New York and put their feet in Lake Erie.  Unfortunately Mrs. Kieber and her family didn't have a chance to drive another 70 miles to dip their toes into the other Great Lake.  Do you know which one they missed?  I'll be posting the answer in a future blog post.

There is still time to send in your pictures!  In fact I just got an email today from an incoming third grader and her mom.  I'll be posting her pictures tomorrow.

Happy Reading!!

More Take A BOOK on Vacation Pictures!!

It has been a while since I've posted any pictures.  I have been very busy getting ready for school to begin.  I'm still in shock over how fast August has gone!  It went by in the blink of an eye.  I've not only been getting the HES Media Center ready, I've also been helping a new Media Specialist in our county get ready to begin the year as well.

In our HES Media Center we have had a few changes.  Mrs. Lorenz and her family moved back to Iowa.  Her husband's contract got done much faster and earlier than any thought it would.  We will miss her a lot, but wish her and her family the best.  We were able to hire a new Media Assistant, she will be a familiar face for some.  Our new HES Media Assistant is Mrs. Bulvin.  She subbed in the Main Office last year when Mrs. Howell and Mrs. Guy were out. I'm looking to have a very successful year this year.

Now on to the Take A BOOK on Vacation Picture!  This picture is of Lauren, who is an incoming Kindergarten student.  Lauren and her family are new to the area and were told about this blog and our Take A BOOK On Vacation program by their neighbors.  (So I want to give Lauren's neighbors a big thank you for promoting this blog and the program!)

Lauren and her family traveled to South Bend Indiana, which is about 667 miles from Hollywood Elementary School.  They went there to visit her Grandparents.  While they were there, Lauren's Grandpa celebrated his 70th Birthday!! Lauren had a great time playing with her cousins.  While in South Bend, they visited the Notre Dame University campus.  Lauren's picture was taken in front of "Touch-Down Jesus", so named because it is right by the Notre Dame football stadium.  Lauren had her Disney Princess book with her to read.  She loves reading it.

There is still time to send it pictures!  You can either email them to me, or give them to me at Open House, which is on Tuesday August 20th from 1:00pm-3:00pm.  Hope to see everyone there.  Also keep checking back because I have Mrs. Kieber's pictures and Mrs. Gilman's picture to get up on the blog!

The Next Take A BOOK On Vacation Pictures

These pictures come from Jack, an incoming first grader.  He and his family went to Nags Head North Carolina to visit even more family, including four cousins.  Nags Head is about 260 miles from Hollywood Elementary School. Jack is reading a great nonfiction book about all the different ocean species they found while visiting Nags Head.

While in Nags Head Jack and his family found lots of moon jellies, or jellies without tentacles.  Once cool thing that they read about and then found on the beach were Lighting Whelk egg cases.  Jack and his family dried them out and opened them up to find tiny little whelk shells just starting out.  They had never seen them on the shore until this trip.  Jack and his family thought it was great to read and learn about them on their trip.

It sounds like Jack and his family had a great trip.  I can't wait to hear more.

Don't forget there is still time to send in your pictures!

Still More Take A BOOK On Vacation Pictures!!

At the beginning of this week I was thrilled to see two more Hollywood students sent in their Take A BOOK On Vacation pictures.  If you haven't sent in your pictures, there is still time!

The first set of pictures comes from Evey, an incoming third grader.  She and her family took a trip to Mexico, which is about 3,205 miles away from Hollywood Elementary School.  Evey made good use of her time on the plane by reading.  I can't wait to hear all about her trip to Mexico. Evey also fit in a little bit of reading while enjoying being in Mexico.

Keep those pictures coming!

A Take A BOOK On Vacation Picture

This next picture for the Take A BOOK On Vacation program comes from Clara, an incoming second grader and Savannah, an incoming Kindergartner.  The two girls went with their family to Atlantic Beach Florida.  Atlantic Beach is about 714 miles away from Hollywood Elementary School.  This beach is located near the top of Florida. While Clara and Savannah were staying in Atlantic Beach they still managed to fit in a little reading.  In the picture they are reading The Circlemaker by Mark Batterson.

From looking at all the pictures that I've gotten for the Take A BOOK On Vacation program many of our HES students have had lots of great summer vacations.  I can't wait to hear more details when I see everyone again. There is still time to send in a picture, if you haven't already!

The Next Take A BOOK On Vacation Picture

The next Take A BOOK On Vacation picture comes from Nolan, an incoming first grader.  He and his family went to visit Fayette Iowa.  While he was there Nolan got to visit lots of family.  That is one of my favorite types of vacations!  Fayette Iowa is about 1,000 miles from Hollywood Elementary School.  Nolan's cousins took him to the library where they got to watch a puppet show and then he was able to check out some books.  The book that Nolan check out looks like a good one.

New Take A BOOK On Vacation Pictures

I hope everyone is enjoying the last bit of summer!  I know I am!  I took a few days off to visit my family in Pennsylvania.  It was great to see them again.  I was also doing some research into my family history.  This is a very rewarding and interesting process, but it does take a lot of time.  One suggestion that I have to everyone is to write stories, vital information, etc. down while your relatives still can remember.  That is the issue that I'm running into right now.  But while I was gone, I was thrilled to get three more pictures for the Take A BOOK On Vacation program.

The first picture comes from Owen, an incoming first grader. He and his family went to Starved Rock Illinois.  I had never heard of Starved Rock, so I had to look it up on the map.  It is up towards the top part of the state.  Starved Rock is about 827.3 miles away from Hollywood Elementary School. Owen and his family shared that it is 12 hours and 42 minutes away from HES.  It looks like Owen has found a great place to read.  I've never been to Illinois before, so I'm very interested to hear more about Owen and his family's visit.

There is still time to send in pictures to be posted on the blog.  Thanks to everyone who has already sent them in.

Even More Take A BOOK On Vacation Pictures!

Our Hollywood students are seeing a lot of sights this summer, but they are also doing lots of reading!  These next pictures are from Charlie, an incoming Kindergartner and Anna, and incoming third grader.  During this summer adventure, they got to spend time with their Grandfather in Baltimore, which is about 86 miles from Hollywood Elementary School.

Anna

While in Baltimore Anna and Charlie got to tour the Liberty Ship John W. Brown.  This is the same type of ship that their Great-Grandfather served on while in the Merchant Marines during World War II.  Anna and Charlie had to wait a bit before the tour began, so they passed the time by reading.  This is something that I would have done when I was their age.  Even today, I still carry a book with me wherever I go.  You never know when you are going to have a spare moment!

Three Great Take A BOOK on Vacation Pictures!!

Sonny with a great Fly Guy book.

I was so happy to see that I got pictures from Sonny, an incoming first grader, and Vick, an incoming fifth grader.  These boys are huge readers!  I was even happier to see that I got a picture from their little brother Charlie, who is an incoming Kindergartner.

Vick is reading one of my favorites!

The boys and their huge extended family went down to Carolina Beach in North Carolina, which is about 373 miles away from Hollywood Elementary School.  Vick, Sonny, Charlie and the rest of their family stayed in a huge house called Bella Casa.

Charlie finishing a good book.

While they were there, they spent time catching waves on the beach, they visited the North Carolina Aquarium in Fort Fisher and even visited the USS North Carolina.  With everything that they were doing, they even manged to fit in some reading time.

Another Take A BOOK On Vacation Picture!!

I get so excited each time I open my email and find another Take A BOOK On Vacation picture.  This time got to see Thomas taking a break from his awesome vacation in Ocean City.  When I was younger I would go to Ocean City a lot for different conventions, but I haven't been back for a while.  I think that I need to fix that!  Ocean City is about 185 miles away from Hollywood Elementary School.  It looks like Thomas is reading a great nonfiction book.

Keep those pictures coming!  Also keep checking back because I've got more pictures that I will be posting!

Harper
Well, Mrs. Reyno isn't in these pictures.  She is the one who took them, but they were too cute not to share.  Mrs. Reyno is loving staying at home and spending time with her twins, Harper and Hudson. She also knows how important it is to expose children to books.  Harper is looking at the book The Crunching Munching Caterpillar.  Hudson is looking at the book You Are My Sunshine.

Hudson
There is still time to send in your Take A BOOK On Vacation pictures if you haven't yet!  I've got more that I will be posting in a few days.  I'll also be posting some books about San Francisco that are available at the public library and some that are available from the HES library.

More Take a BOOK on Vacation Pictures!!

I was so excited to get these pictures from Anabel, Eliza, and Leo.  The kids and their family made their annual trip to Maine.  In Maine the stayed in Weld, which is 667 miles away from Hollywood Elementary School.  While in Weld, the kids participated in the summer reading program sponsored by the public library.  Here is Leo and Eliza outside the library with some of the books that they checked out.

Eliza and her book.
During their visit, they had lots of rain which made for lots of reading!  My favorite type of vacation!!  Anabel, Eliza, Leo and their family also stayed in Rumford Maine.  I've actually been to Rumford Maine when I was visiting friends in New Hampshire a few years ago.  While Anabel, Eliza, and Leo were in Rumford, they made sure they visited the public library.  Leo picked a great book, Big Smelly Bear by Britta Teckentrup to read.  Eliza picked one of my favorites, I Like Me by Nancy Carlson to read.  Anabel picked a really great nonfiction book to read.  This summer I'm trying to read more nonfiction books, because they are not always my first choice.
Leo and his book.

Keep checking back because I've got three more posts coming up with some great pictures.  Also if you haven't sent in any pictures yet, there is still time!
