Great New Fairy Tale Book

I came across a great new fairy tale book that would be great for 4th and 5th Graders.  It is The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom by Christopher Healy. This summary is from www.Goodreads.com:  Prince Liam. Prince Frederic. Prince Duncan. Prince Gustav. You've never heard of them, have you? These are the princes who saved Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White, and Rapunzel, respectively, and yet, thanks to those lousy bards who wrote the tales, you likely know them only as Prince Charming. But all of this is about to change.

This book was a really great new way to look at "Prince Charming". I really enjoyed this story because it is a very unique story. I've always loved the fairy tales Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White, and Rapunzel, but I've always wondered about each Prince Charming and what they were like. Well, this book answered many of my questions. I was happy to hear that it is the first in a series. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

Happy Reading!!

If You Like Junie B., You'll Love Lucy Rose

I came across a great new to me series about Lucy Rose by Katy Kelly.  I knew that we had a few of Lucy Rose books in the HES Library, but I have not had the opportunity to read them.  Wow, I didn't know what I was missing!  The first in the series is Here's the Thing About Me.  In this one you meet Lucy Rose, who has recently moved to Washington D.C. with her mother to be closer to her grandparents.  The move is made because her parents have recently separated.  It shows how she adjusts to all the changes in her life.  There are three more in the series:  Big On Plans, Working Myself to Pieces & Bits, and Busy Like You Can't Believe.

One thing that I really like about this series is that it is not written in chapters.  It is written as Lucy's diary.  I think this might inspire a few budding writers.  Anyone who likes Junie B., Amber Brown, and Ramona will also like Lucy Rose. All of these books can be found at the Leonardtown Public Library.

Happy Reading!!

Great Book: Wonder by R.J. Palacio

I highly recommend the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio.  It is a great story for fourth grade students and above!

This book is about a 5th grade boy, Auggie.  He was born with Treacher Collins, a chromosome disorder that results in severe facial deformities.   Auggie was home schooled from Kindergarten to 4th grade.  When it is time for his 5th grade year, his parents decide to enroll him in a prep school.  Auggie feels that he is just an ordinary kid, and he wishes everyone else would see him that way too.

R.J. Palacio debut novel has sparked an anti-bullying campaign called Choose Kind. Click here to go to the Choose Kind website and pledge to Choose Kind every day. This website was created and is maintained by Random House Children's Books. Please visit this site with your child and discuss ways to be kind every day.

Big thanks to the students and their families who came out for our Spirit Night at the Leonardtown Public Library.  We had over 25 students come out to sign up for the Summer Reading Program.  If you were not able to join us at the library, you can still go into the library to sign up or sign up online.  Huge thanks to all the staff that came out to support this event.  Also a big thank you to the Leonardtown Public Library for hosting this event.

Here are two pictures from our event.  Hope you find the time to read over the summer.
